Cumberland County, Republic of Vermont was a short-lived county in Vermont, comprising two counties which seceded from New York in 1777: Cumberland County and Gloucester County. On 17 March 1778 Bennington and Unity Counties created as the first two original counties in Vermont.〔Vt. State Papers, 12:43-44〕 On 21 March 1778 Unity County renamed Cumberland County.〔Vt. State Papers, 3:13.〕 In 1781, this county was broken up into three counties in Vermont and one that eventually became part of New Hampshire.
